EP.FRI.390 Improving care for patients with acute bowel obstruction: A closed loop audit

Abstract Aims Acute Bowel Obstruction (ABO) accounts for 10% of emergency surgical admissions and when surgery is required mortality can exceed 10%. Early diagnosis associated with improved patient outcomes timely acquisition abdominal CT scans help prevent delays. The NCEPOD 2020 report on ABO identified ‘delays in imaging’ as a key area improvement the care these patients, delays being exacerbated if an X-ray (AXR) was performed well CT. This study looks at ways to expedite patients presenting ABO. Methods A retrospective audit 77 admitted from A&E or SAU April 2019 February conducted. Imaging modality, time-to-CT scan time-to-diagnosis recorded. Results recommendations were presented locally evidence based pathway implemented publicised. 20 audited prospectively, post implementation. 70.1% initial received CT-scan 42% AXR before their eventual CT-scan. average wait definitive radiological 27.8hr. After implementation only 18% both modes imaging time has been reduced 10.7hr. Conclusions Raising awareness appropriate use CT-scans number concomitant expediting making improving outcomes.
